The Philosophical and Linguistic Critique of Western Modernity according to Taha Abdulrahman

Abstract

This research deals with the criticism of Western modernity according to Taha Abdulrahman based on philosophical and linguistic criticism. It is divided into an introduction and three chapters. The first chapter is concerned with the Islamic and civilizational background in Taha Abdulrahman's criticism of Western modernity. The second chapter focused on Islamic modernity and the Islamic alternative to Western linguistic theories through politeness theory. The third chapter discussed terms and concepts and their cultural connotations. The research concluded that the criticism of Western modernity is based on the separation of modernity from ethics (i.e. religion and life), which is inconsistent with the Islamic religion. The project that Taha came up with is indeed a moral project in which he criticizes Western life, which is far from morality. Taha Abdulrahman is considered one of the first to use the term "perceptions" in 1970 to accurately express the meanings of use, context, and interaction.
